VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 15 – DAY 2

By: Justine Barnes & NLAStylist

Images: Peter Jensen

Black and white seemed to be an ongoing, very enjoyable theme for day 3 of Vancouver Fashion Week.  While the silhouettes changed, black and white stayed the same, looking incredibly chic. Another common theme was pairing these structured, yet over sized looks with an Oxford shoe.

LaSalle College

LaSalle College is a regular and much-anticipated show at Vancouver Fashion Week, with this season being its 11th season.  It is always so refreshing to witness such young creativity, executed with such maturity.

Adam-Lin Bungang

AMAZING. Adam-Lin Bungang’s dresses kept to the black and white theme perfectly while playing with different proportions. They were truly something any women would want in their closet. These dresses were a little sporty and very chic!

Yicheng (Eric) Chen

This was Yicheng (Eric) Chen’s second time showing with Vancouver Fashion Week. We really enjoyed his take on the roaring 20’s. He created pieces with low hip lines and used feathers to evoke the 1920’s.

Shunan Zeng

The inspiration behind Shunan Zeng’s collection was found in women, post World War I, representing freedom and hope.  We loved the cohesive colour palette of muted tone and the creative panels on both the front and back of the garments – creating a fresh and modern twist on the classic boyish style.

Su Yang

Su Yang created dresses that were very chic with dropped waistlines. It was very noticeable that she created these pieces inspired by menswear, with the addition of embellishments, making it extremely tres chic!

Sara Armstrong

Headlining the night was Sara Armstrong and we absolutely loved the trouser pants that she created for F/W 15 that donned cross-over origami style panels! Each look was captivating and interesting.  Her pieces were oversized while still being perfectly tailored.

We caught up with Sara and asked her a few quick questions.  Click HERE to see more!

VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK – STYLE DIARY – LOOK 1

For those that know me, from the moment I moved to Vancouver 4 years ago, my aim has been to highlight local designers and boutiques and showcase their talent either on my blog, in editorials or at local events. This season I’m more than honored to show off  a gorgeous piece by emerging designer Alex S. Yu’s from his s/s 2015 collection at Vancouver Fashion Week.

I love the exaggerated shape and structure of this top and the metallic patch work – bang on trend for Spring and Summer this year.  I wanted to draw out the pink and red tones in the plastic foil fabric, so I paired it with a lustrous red skirt and red lips and nails.

VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 2015 – DAY 1

It’s that time of year again and a good one at that!

Day 1 of Vancouver Fashion Week brought to us beautiful designs and much anticipated local talent that we have been keeping our eyes on.   Here are our favourites of the evening:

ALEX S. YU

Returning to the VFW catwalk for the second time, Vancouver emerging designer, Alex S. Yu impressed his loyal fans once again with dazzling metalics and fun accents.  Still keeping the same playfulness and use of interesting fabrics and materials as he did in his last collection, this line was inspired by ‘Mean Girls’.

I LOVE CHOC

Dubbed as China’s first you street style fashion brand, I LOVE CHOC brought their ‘1Dollar’ themed collection across the sea to delight our senses.  Another fresh and playful collection for the night with references to dollar bills and my favourite childhood book character (and first ever vinyl) – Pinocchio.   A strong and cohesive collection with its textures and bright primary colours. YKS

We loved the leather looks by South Korean, YongKyunShin, with the clever cutouts and placement of frills and detailing.  The mixture of fabrics, belts and zippers added to the provocative avant-garde feel of the collection.

CONNALLY MCDOUGAL

Another returning Vancouver favourite, emerging designer, Connally McDougal wowed us with a collection that primarily consisted of deep tones, luxe velvets and rich textures, with slight references to the 20s era.  We loved the brighter patterned print that popped up in various items of clothing with really uplifted the collection, keeping it fresh and youthful.

Vancouver Fashion Week founder Jamal Abdourahman is thrilled of the breadth of creative talent from new as well as returning designers. Jamal said,

“We are looking forward to sharing amazing creativity this season, with Vancouver shining the spotlight on lots of great local and international talent. We love to celebrate the diversity of fashion culture, and Vancouver provides this perfect platform to support emerging talent.”

Amongst the top-returning designers is Noe Bernacelli, whose Peruvian international style and beauty has been greatly received in Vancouver. He will be joined by Shravan Kumar whose motto, ‘Fashion is religion, than mere profession’, inspired his unconventional designs and use of textiles.

Also on the lineup is Korean designer Hong Kiyoung. Kiyoung is widely recognized for his luxury streetwear, which experiments silhouettes and colorful prints.

Every season, Vancouver Fashion Week continues to push its boundaries and strives to attract new and emerging designers from across the world.

This season it welcomes Chinese designer ILOVECHOC who mixes cute cartoon designs with luxury fabrics. Korean company JUKOjulie who has been greatly welcomed into the New York fashion scene and designer Paloma Sanchez who has been recognized as one of the 30 best jewelry designers in the world (‘Unique Book; The Best Jewelry Designers’.)

VFW also continues to support the city’s homegrown talent with the return of local designers Connally McDougall, Grandi’s Atelier and Sara Armstrong. All three designers are local to Vancouver and are inspired by the city.

Sara Armstrong said, “I am excited to be returning for FW15 at Vancouver Fashion Week. The team are a great group of creative minds and they are amazing to work with. They are setting the pace for up and coming Canadian fashion designers supporting them with an international market. It is the best fashion event in western Canada and I cannot wait for the Opening Gala.”

ALEX S. YU – VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 2015 & POP-UP

Alex S Yu Vancouver Designer

Alex S. Yu is pleased to announce that he will be showing his fall/winter 2015 collection titled : The Sweet Sixteen at Vancouver Fashion Week at the Queen Elizabeth Plaza on 17th, March 2015.

Get your VFW tickets HERE.

The fall/winter 2015 collection entitled ‘The Sweet Sixteen’ finds inspiration in the often capricious teenage angst and the cult movie ‘mean girls.’  The overly mature and sexy appeal of pop culture and its pin-ups and media darlings intrigued and inspired Alex to design in a reverse way. This season he designed for a woman who is longing to be young again, to live naively, freely and worry-free and to remember that it’s okay to break some rules, have some fun and eat that extra scoop of double chocolate ice cream!

Alex launched his debut collection at Vancouver fashion week spring summer 2015 as the winner of niche magazine’s emerging designer sponsorship competition. For my interview with him click HERE

Alex S Yu Vancouver Designer Vancouver Fashion Week

The Alex S. Yu fw2015 pop up shop/showroom will be held at @thisopenspace at 434 Columbia street, Chinatown from the 20th to 22nd March between12:00 – 19:00 every day.  A selected series of limited edition products will be available for purchase and pieces from the fw2015 collection will be available for pre-order directly from the designer.  Everyone, wholesale and buyers are all welcome.  Come and chat, have some fun, take a selfie, and eat a cookie!
