From Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd March, Vancouver Fashion Week will return to its downtown venue at Queen Elizabeth Plaza.

The Opening Gala, on Monday 16th March, will kickstart the week of seven days of showcase events, presenting the creative talents of over 30 designers from all over the world.

Vancouver Fashion Week founder Jamal Abdourahman is thrilled of the breadth of creative talent from new as well as returning designers. Jamal said,

“We are looking forward to sharing amazing creativity this season, with Vancouver shining the spotlight on lots of great local and international talent. We love to celebrate the diversity of fashion culture, and Vancouver provides this perfect platform to support emerging talent.”

Amongst the top-returning designers is Noe Bernacelli, whose Peruvian international style and beauty has been greatly received in Vancouver. He will be joined by Shravan Kumar whose motto, ‘Fashion is religion, than mere profession’, inspired his unconventional designs and use of textiles.

Also on the lineup is Korean designer Hong Kiyoung. Kiyoung is widely recognized for his luxury streetwear, which experiments silhouettes and colorful prints.

Every season, Vancouver Fashion Week continues to push its boundaries and strives to attract new and emerging designers from across the world.

This season it welcomes Chinese designer ILOVECHOC who mixes cute cartoon designs with luxury fabrics. Korean company JUKOjulie who has been greatly welcomed into the New York fashion scene and designer Paloma Sanchez who has been recognized as one of the 30 best jewelry designers in the world (‘Unique Book; The Best Jewelry Designers’.)

VFW also continues to support the city’s homegrown talent with the return of local designers Connally McDougall, Grandi’s Atelier and Sara Armstrong. All three designers are local to Vancouver and are inspired by the city.

Sara Armstrong said, “I am excited to be returning for FW15 at Vancouver Fashion Week. The team are a great group of creative minds and they are amazing to work with. They are setting the pace for up and coming Canadian fashion designers supporting them with an international market. It is the best fashion event in western Canada and I cannot wait for the Opening Gala.”

Alex S Yu Vancouver Designer

Alex S. Yu is pleased to announce that he will be showing his fall/winter 2015 collection titled : The Sweet Sixteen at Vancouver Fashion Week at the Queen Elizabeth Plaza on 17th, March 2015.

Get your VFW tickets HERE.

The fall/winter 2015 collection entitled ‘The Sweet Sixteen’ finds inspiration in the often capricious teenage angst and the cult movie ‘mean girls.’  The overly mature and sexy appeal of pop culture and its pin-ups and media darlings intrigued and inspired Alex to design in a reverse way. This season he designed for a woman who is longing to be young again, to live naively, freely and worry-free and to remember that it’s okay to break some rules, have some fun and eat that extra scoop of double chocolate ice cream!

Alex launched his debut collection at Vancouver fashion week spring summer 2015 as the winner of niche magazine’s emerging designer sponsorship competition. For my interview with him click HERE

Style Diary – Vancouver Fashion Week – Day 3

Graphic prints, sporty street and 60s mod silhouettes!

This was certainly a fun outfit for Vancouver Fashion Week.  I was drawn like a moth to a flame with this bold paintbrush print in a 60s mod style dress. I added a bit of street with the printed leggings and a bit of sporty spice with the mesh layer underneath.  A little contrasting pop of colour never hurt anyone either – so paired it up with my fave blue suede ankle booties ;p

Outfit: Coat, earrings, necklace – Topshop / Dress, mesh top & leggings – H&M / Booties – Aldo / Bag – Winners / Nail polish – Urban Outfitters

Bump: 24 weeks ;p

The final day of VFW crept around far too quick for our liking!  After a week long of ‘frowing’ (one who frequents the front row), the final group of designers was the perfect way to end it all on a high note.  From around the globe, they brought strong collections in a great smorgasbord of quirky, funky, dark and edgy.

Our faves for the night were:

Londoner, Connally McDougall brightened up the room with her neutral and warm yellow ready-to-wear and couture collection.  Made by hand and a lot of love, she uses sustainable fabrics that are rich and diverse in texture.

Tribal funk was woven through every fibre of this exciting collection.  The hair, make-up and accessories were so creative and fun.  Designer, George Styler, who studied fashion in Belgrade, produced an interesting knitwear collection and as in his past collections, portrayed an acceptance of individuality through the freedom of fashion.

Karen Yang brought a fresh and fashion forward collection, with layers of pattern clashes that played off each other perfectly.  Using her cultural insights as inspiration for her quirky and playful designs, this line was certainly a breath of fresh air!

Taking us to the dark side, Vlades’s attention to detail and form was pure magic.  We especially loved the common theme of the cross-over structured fabric panel hanging down in an asymmetric skirt form.  Small details with huge impact.

And lastly, to finish off the night’s variety of different styles, Hong Kiyoung dropped some serious sporty street style with plenty of edge and attitute.  A cohesive androgynous collection that flowed seamlessly from one bold colour palette into the next.

We would like to thank all the staff and Jamal for looking after us all week and for putting on such a great event.  The venue, set up, staff were on on point!

Finally, a few moments of downtown to catch up on Style Diary posts, runway reviews, interviews, etc.

Vancouver Fashion Week kicked of its s/s 14 shows with an opening gala showcasing a design from each of the designers for the upcoming week.  A fancy affair in a beautiful set up that required a little more fall glam for this baby mama ;p
