VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 2015 – DAY 1

It’s that time of year again and a good one at that!

Day 1 of Vancouver Fashion Week brought to us beautiful designs and much anticipated local talent that we have been keeping our eyes on.   Here are our favourites of the evening:

ALEX S. YU

Returning to the VFW catwalk for the second time, Vancouver emerging designer, Alex S. Yu impressed his loyal fans once again with dazzling metalics and fun accents.  Still keeping the same playfulness and use of interesting fabrics and materials as he did in his last collection, this line was inspired by ‘Mean Girls’.

I LOVE CHOC

Dubbed as China’s first you street style fashion brand, I LOVE CHOC brought their ‘1Dollar’ themed collection across the sea to delight our senses.  Another fresh and playful collection for the night with references to dollar bills and my favourite childhood book character (and first ever vinyl) – Pinocchio.   A strong and cohesive collection with its textures and bright primary colours. YKS

We loved the leather looks by South Korean, YongKyunShin, with the clever cutouts and placement of frills and detailing.  The mixture of fabrics, belts and zippers added to the provocative avant-garde feel of the collection.

CONNALLY MCDOUGAL

Another returning Vancouver favourite, emerging designer, Connally McDougal wowed us with a collection that primarily consisted of deep tones, luxe velvets and rich textures, with slight references to the 20s era.  We loved the brighter patterned print that popped up in various items of clothing with really uplifted the collection, keeping it fresh and youthful.

KIT AND ACE – GASTOWN SHOPPING

KIT AND ACE

KIT and Ace Gastown Boutique

Whether you are involved in the fashion industry or not, we are sure you have heard something about Kit and Ace, which opened their first retail location in Vancouver in July 2014.   If you’ve visited downtown, you have also most likely walked past their beautiful location in Gastown, where there always seems to be an employee sewing something new on display in the window.  We were very interested in what this company was up to and set up a quick interview to ease our curious mind ?

What is the 5 year plan for this company?

We see Kit and Ace as a global brand.   We started the company with that plan in mind and have been rapidly expanding to meet that vision.  In less than six months we’ve hired 240 people and will continue to grow in 2015.  In five years we will be a globally recognized brand, known for our innovative technical fabrics that save people time.

How many locations do you have so far?

Currently Kit and Ace has seven locations:  Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Toronto, New York and San Francisco. We have a rapid expansion plan for 2015, which includes more locations in North America as well as Europe, Asia and Australia.

What is different about your cashmere?

Our cashmere is part of a proprietary fabric called “Qemir™” (pronounced come-here).  The fabric insures that our clothes can be thrown into the wash and dry without risk of shrinking, stretching or pilling while retaining the luxuriant feeling of cashmere we all love.

What is Meet Kit?

Meet Kit is our feature blog showcasing women that embody the spirit of our muse Kit.  Kit is the type of woman living a full contact lifestyle, finding passion and quality in all that she does. She is our muse and whom we design our products for.  We will have a rotating ensemble of women on the blog that represent Kit in daily life.

What is different about this company that allows it to succeed?

Not only do we have the proven background in the fashion industry in managing a global brand, we’ve brought on a creative team that knows how to think outside the box. We’re creating an entirely new market, Technical Luxury™, and we think people are resonating with wanting a brand that caters to their lifestyle needs and keeps them looking fashionable.

IMPRESSIVE!

“Your time is precious and your comfort is paramount.  We create designs that look good and feel amazing, so you can forget the small stuff and get on with the big stuff.” – Kit And Ace

MANDY LAU x COVETING CHI CHI Giveaway!

I met Mandy Lau, a Vancouver based illustrator specializing in fashion and lifestyle, at my recent event collaboration with Fine Finds in Yaletown where she wowed me with her illustrations!

She has shown her prints at group art shows including ‘Drawing Influence ñ A Fashion Illustration Art Show’ put on by Plaid Magazine in Toronto, created mural illustrations for the fashion-themed DNA3 condos presentation centre in Toronto, and is a regular illustration contributor to Real Weddings magazine.

Mandy has also been featured in Flare, Plaid Magazine, and Vancouver Fashion eZine.

I have always admired anyone who can translate what they see in their mind and apply it to paper with such eloquence! Not surprisingly, I recently found a special place on my wall for one of her stunning prints, and the good news is, so can you!

Mandy Lau is giving away one of her illustrations personally signed, stamped and dated by Mandy herself!
