VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK – STYLE DIARY – LOOK 1

For those that know me, from the moment I moved to Vancouver 4 years ago, my aim has been to highlight local designers and boutiques and showcase their talent either on my blog, in editorials or at local events. This season I’m more than honored to show off  a gorgeous piece by emerging designer Alex S. Yu’s from his s/s 2015 collection at Vancouver Fashion Week.

I love the exaggerated shape and structure of this top and the metallic patch work – bang on trend for Spring and Summer this year.  I wanted to draw out the pink and red tones in the plastic foil fabric, so I paired it with a lustrous red skirt and red lips and nails.

VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 2015 – DAY 1

It’s that time of year again and a good one at that!

Day 1 of Vancouver Fashion Week brought to us beautiful designs and much anticipated local talent that we have been keeping our eyes on.   Here are our favourites of the evening:

ALEX S. YU

Returning to the VFW catwalk for the second time, Vancouver emerging designer, Alex S. Yu impressed his loyal fans once again with dazzling metalics and fun accents.  Still keeping the same playfulness and use of interesting fabrics and materials as he did in his last collection, this line was inspired by ‘Mean Girls’.

I LOVE CHOC

Dubbed as China’s first you street style fashion brand, I LOVE CHOC brought their ‘1Dollar’ themed collection across the sea to delight our senses.  Another fresh and playful collection for the night with references to dollar bills and my favourite childhood book character (and first ever vinyl) – Pinocchio.   A strong and cohesive collection with its textures and bright primary colours. YKS

We loved the leather looks by South Korean, YongKyunShin, with the clever cutouts and placement of frills and detailing.  The mixture of fabrics, belts and zippers added to the provocative avant-garde feel of the collection.

CONNALLY MCDOUGAL

Another returning Vancouver favourite, emerging designer, Connally McDougal wowed us with a collection that primarily consisted of deep tones, luxe velvets and rich textures, with slight references to the 20s era.  We loved the brighter patterned print that popped up in various items of clothing with really uplifted the collection, keeping it fresh and youthful.

ALEX S. YU – VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 2015 & POP-UP

Alex S Yu Vancouver Designer

Alex S. Yu is pleased to announce that he will be showing his fall/winter 2015 collection titled : The Sweet Sixteen at Vancouver Fashion Week at the Queen Elizabeth Plaza on 17th, March 2015.

Get your VFW tickets HERE.

The fall/winter 2015 collection entitled ‘The Sweet Sixteen’ finds inspiration in the often capricious teenage angst and the cult movie ‘mean girls.’  The overly mature and sexy appeal of pop culture and its pin-ups and media darlings intrigued and inspired Alex to design in a reverse way. This season he designed for a woman who is longing to be young again, to live naively, freely and worry-free and to remember that it’s okay to break some rules, have some fun and eat that extra scoop of double chocolate ice cream!

Alex launched his debut collection at Vancouver fashion week spring summer 2015 as the winner of niche magazine’s emerging designer sponsorship competition. For my interview with him click HERE

EMERGING DESIGNER – INTERVIEW WITH ALEX S. YU

ALEX S. YU + THE LOST YOUTH

By: Nicolette Lang-Andersen

Sometime life takes you on a path you didn’t expect or plan for – the one that you were always destined for.

For up and coming Vancouver designer, Alex S. Yu, this is exactly what happened.  A dedicated computer science student from a traditional family, where a career in fashion was not seen as a solid career, he found a way to turn his dreams into a reality.  During school (and working part time at Club Monaco), Alex found himself consistently infusing fashion into his various website projects, and quickly realized he had another calling.  Keeping it under the radar from his parents, he enrolled in a part time sewing and pattern making class and created a mini collection to start up his portfolio, which he then used to Enroll with at Blanche Macdonald.  A few more mini collections later (which may have included a cheeky pair of polka dot boxer shorts), he showcased at TAS fashion show where he finally revealed to his parents the creative passion and undeniable talent that he had.  Needless to say, they form a part of the mass of Alex S. Yu fans out there today. Alex S. Yu Vancouver Designer VFW

Wanting to find his own voice as a designer, Alex made the leap across the pond to continue his studies in fashion at the London College of Fashion, where he found daily inspiration through the history, fashion, culture, galleries and museums. On completing his studies, he planned to work under a few designers to gain more experience on the business side, but fate again showed him a different door – a chance to showcase at Vancouver Fashion Week s/s 2015 through a sponsorship with Niche Magazine.

His collection, The Lost Youth, was whipped up in just one month and inspired by his time in London.  In particular, East London near Brick Lane – a vibrant area where street artists express their feelings and anger towards the government in a playful way through their artwork.  These surroundings translated into the colours and shapes of his collection but Alex also found inspiration from his favourite childhood book character for the exaggerated lines and curves – Dr. Seuss.   For fabrics, he wanted to create wearable clothing with experimental fabrics such as plastics, coated paper and outdoor fabrics.

This rushed but stunningly executed youthful collection peaked much interest from around the Globe. Since the VFW show, Alex’s collection has been featured in Vogue UK, Vogue Italia, Glamour UK, Elle Italia, The Province, Vancouver Sun and more, and he just recently travelled to Tokyo for an exclusive photoshoot with his collection showcasing his talent to a whole new audience.

His views in design have remained the same since the day he started, believing that we live in an age where fashion should be an outlet to express yourself, to have fun and break the rules a little…or a lot.

The ambitious designer has his sights set on some big goals for next year.  Apart from wishing to dress Susie Bubble of stylebubble.co.uk in his collection, Alex is planning to take part in the next season of VFW, will be launching an online store and hopes to showcase at London Fashion Week.

As any young designer knows, showcasing a new collection on a bigger platform can be costly and Alex has recently set up an Idigogo campaign to help him launch his f/w 2015 at VFW, where in return for your contribution, you are rewarded with various items from a small collection he has made.  To contribute or find out more, visit: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/launch-alex-s-yu-fw2015-collection
